As we all know, the spot price of silver has sky-rocketed toward the $30 an ounce region. Silver is the precious metal to invest in. Some say silver is running out.

Silver can be purchased in many physical forms; silver bullion bars, silver stocks, silver coins and jewelry. Today we will answer the question: Is it worth investing in silver coins?

Old British and US silver coins

Old silver coins is are great way to own silver. Some coins have historical value, they are recognised worldwide, they have known silver contents and are therefore a safe and easy way to collect silver.

British silver coins vs. Silver coins from the USA.

Silver content as follows:

  • British silver coins prior to 1920 are made as sterling silver and contain 92.5% pure silver.
  • United States silver coins prior to 1965 contain 90% silver.

As a resident of the UK I believe British silver coins are a better investment. They have a higher silver content and have a great market here in the UK. British silver coins often sell for higher than their spot silver value.

Most silver collectors would disagree. Silver coins from the USA are much more popular and their silver content is widely known. There is a huge market in the USA for junk US silver coins and investing in them might be a better option for their high liquidity.
